News for all from around the Club…

Vale Noelle Bright

We were saddened to learn of Noelle’s passing on 28th December. We offer our sincerest condolences to fellow member and husband Roy. Noelle’s life will be celebrated at a private ceremony on 20th January.

Ya got yer kilts oot!

We had a great Xmas breakup party with a very good turnout for the new, more relaxed format. The Whisky Gypsies provided excellent music with dancing right up to the close.

Well done and THANK YOU Debbie Johnstone for organising this terrific event.

Century 21 Tournament

Once again, Bentleigh put on a fantastic tournament. A wee shower after the first game slowed it down a touch, but we were very lucky as the previous day was well over 40 degrees.

There were many people involved in making the day a success – far too many to mention individually. However, if I may, I’ll acknowledge and thank the following people for their significant input leading up to and on the day:

  • Harold Laver and Century 21 for the most generous tournament sponsorship.
  • Alan Walker and Chris Michell for managing and promoting the tournament.
  • Alan Walker and Dave Young for tidying up and making the Club look great.
  • Barb Cruickshank, Jude Stammers and the entire kitchen crew for the delicious and nutritious food.
  • Greg McHugh and Mel Fairbairn for running the bar all day.
  • Andrew Fitzharris for preparing the grass greens superbly.
  • Debbie Johnstone for the photos and lending a hand pretty much everywhere.

Congratulations to the tournament’s winners:

Overall Winners                                Greg Fletcher, Moorabbin
Runners Up                                        Kieran Casey, Coatesville
1st game                                               Ian Jones, Sale
2nd game                                              Kevin Pattison, Brighton
3rd game                                              Mark Kirkham, Bentleigh

I would also like to acknowledge and thank the Sale and Milawa teams who traveled a long way to get to our tournament. We might be seeing a Bentleigh side or two venture to their tournaments down the track…

A selection of photos from the day are up on our Facebook page:

Friday Night Barefoot Bowls

Dennis Jacobsen has launched Friday Night barefoot bowls. The hardest part is getting people to come along, so we need everyone to get behind DJ and invite friends and family down to have a go. DJ would also like some help on the evenings (setting up, bar, helping guests, packing up etc) so if you can lend a hand, I’m sure DJ will be rapt.

Your new website is live

Thanks to David Crook and Clarky, our new website is up and running and content on the old website closed out.

BBC Shenanigans Returns

Due to popular demand, BBC Shenanigans is returning to the newsletter and Douggie Meehan was happy to oblige…

Douggie has just returned from a language and cultural tour of Thailand and offers us these handy translations when liaising with the locals…

  • Thai lady: “Orr, you can eat!”
Translation: Well that’s a surprise. You can eat spicy food after all.
  • Thai lady: “Why u know darling?”
Translation: How the hell did you anticipate exactly what I was just about to do?
  • Thai lady: “Darl ling, come by you call me nah?”
Translation: Darling, when you return here from whatever you intend doing from wherever you intend going, I would appreciate it if you rang me, so we can meet up again.
  • Thai lady: “I not maow. I drunk.”
Translation: How dare you say I’m inebriated. I’ve just had a lot more alcoholic drinks than I normally would.
  • Thai lady: “I say no now. I hab money alredy.”
Translation: I am not the slightest bit interested in being with you tonight. So the answer is no, N. O. And please, don’t ask me again. Can’t you see us ladies are having a night out by ourselves?

And one from Layla…

A wife, being the romantic sort, sent her BBC husband a text: “If you are sleeping, send me your dreams. If you are laughing, send me your smile. If you are eating, send me a bite. If you are drinking, send me a sip. If you are crying, send me your tears. I love you!

The husband, typically non-romantic, replied: “I am on the toilet. Please advise.
