Listen Up! A Word from Ron…

Welcome to our New Members!

I’m delighted to welcome new members to our Club:

  • Johnny Keogh
  • Graeme Sager
  • Darren Sager and
  • Scott Sager

We have been very fortunate with people choosing to join our Club. As you know, the 5th side was just created this season, and we are well on track towards entering a 6th side next year!

Presentation Night

We had another wonderful Presentation Night on 14th April. We were once again privileged to have the great Doug Osborne and his family join us in celebrating the successes of 2017/18.

To all those that contributed to making the night memorable – THANK YOU! Special thanks of course to our MC Rob Michael, the chief organisers Harold Laver, Greg Fidler, Mark Thompson and Wayne Dobell. Thanks also to Lindsay Kerr for the trophies, Wags for the catering and to Rae Pocknee for cleaning things up.

For those who couldn’t attend, the full list of award recipients is provided at the end of this Newsletter. Presentation Night photos from Wayne Dobell and Melinda Kerr are now up in the gallery section of our website.

Remember your 2017/18 Season

If you’re a bit like me, some of the elation of such a successful 2017/18 season may be wearing off, but I encourage ALL bowlers who participated in pennant last year to lock away in the memory banks what the Club achieved. In years to come, you will be able to brag that you were a part of the Club when it achieved 9 out of 10 sides playing finals – no-one will believe you, but you’ll know it’s true! Hang onto it!

Our new Beer System is coming

The new beer system will be installed on Friday 18th May. This new system will result in a lot less wastage, fresher, cleaner beer and will feature VB on tap as well as our standard Carlton Draught and Cascade Light.

John Simpson has a lot of under bench prep work to do before then. To allow this to happen, tap beer will be turned off this Friday 11th May and the 2 existing temprites will be de-gassed and removed.

Please be patient while we implement this major improvement to our bar facilities.

AGM – 2:00pm, Sunday 3rd June

The AGM will be held on Sunday 3rd June at 2:00pm. Per our Club Constitution, all Committee roles will be spilled and a new Committee appointed at the AGM.

Your Notice of Meeting kit is available now and contains a nomination for Committee Form which you need to complete in order to nominate.

If sitting on Committee doesn’t rock your boat, please feel free to let a new Committee member know that you are willing to help out and how you can help out.

It’s easy to sit on the sidelines and throw rocks to achieve nothing – it’s far more rewarding to get involved and help to achieve something.

Bowling Matters!

Edinburgh Shield

16 players travelled to Echuca to represent the Bentleigh RSL in the annual Edinburgh Shield tournament. While the bowls performance was not up to what would have been expected, the group thoroughly enjoyed the tournament, and the great spirit in which it is played.

Winter Social Bowls – Brrrr!

Ronnie G and Tony Tes did a great job with Winter Bowls last year. This year’s comp kicked off on Saturday 28th April and will run well into August – right up to the start of the Pennant Practice Games. We’ve already been treated to great home-made soups from Greg McHugh and Layla Clegg.

It’s a triples format – you can enter a full side of 3 players or put your name down as a single and the organisers will do their best to get you a game. $10 per head includes FREE raffle tickets with top prize being 2 breakfasts at di Marko’s Off Centre Café!

Visiting bowlers are most welcome to participate.

Other Winter Bowls activities are:

  • Tuesday midday in-door carpet bowls – See Peg Woolley if interested.
  • Tuesday evening Southern In-door bowls – See Alan Walker if interested.

For new members – please note that we remain open on Thursday evenings all year round and would love to see you down at the Club for a bevvy or two.

Social News

Kellybrook Winery Cider Festival

31 boarded the bus to Kellybrook Winery for their 30h Annual Cider Festival last Sunday. The weather gods smiled on us and we enjoyed beautiful warm and sunny conditions. While Brades over promised on the free Scrumpy part, we still all had a great time sampling the ciders, beers, wines and pretty decent eats from the food trucks.

Thankfully, 31 people also boarded the bus for the trip back home to Bentleigh. This trip was a bit more rowdy with the Scot contingent leading a chorus of raucous folk songs for the journey home.

C7arky has reported that, when consumed in the appropriate amounts, cider has a wonderful laxative effect…

Thanks to all who participated, and I hope you had a great day out!

Congratulations to our 2017/2018 Award Recipients
